Using This Converter

This converts a single already-known CGPA
Enter the cumulative GPA your institution has already calculated for you, and this tool converts it between scales and gives a percentage/classification — it doesn't calculate a cumulative GPA from individual semester grades. For computing GPA from actual courses and credits, use the GPA Calculator instead.
Pick the scale your CGPA is actually reported on
Check your transcript for the correct scale (4.0, 5.0, 7.0, or 10.0) before converting — using the wrong source scale gives a meaningless result.
Classification labels are general conventions
"Distinction," "Merit," and similar labels shown here are common conventions, not your specific institution's official classification — check your program's actual grading policy for anything that matters academically.

How to Use the CGPA Calculator

  1. Enter your CGPA — your cumulative grade point average as shown on your transcript.
  2. Select your GPA scale — choose 4.0 (US/UK standard), 5.0, 7.0, or 10.0 (common in India/Pakistan).
  3. Read percentage equivalent — see your CGPA converted to percentage using the standard formula for your scale.
  4. Check letter grade — see the letter grade equivalent (A+, A, B, C, D, F).
  5. See scale conversions — the calculator shows your equivalent GPA on all other scales simultaneously.
🎓 India/Pakistan conversion: Most universities use Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 (on a 10.0 scale). So 8.5 CGPA = 8.5 × 9.5 = 80.75%. Some universities use different multipliers — always verify with your institution's official conversion policy, especially for job applications and graduate school admissions where the exact formula matters.

Understanding GPA and CGPA

📊 GPA vs CGPA
GPA (Grade Point Average): average for one semester. CGPA (Cumulative GPA): weighted average across all completed semesters. CGPA = Total Grade Points Earned ÷ Total Credit Hours Attempted. CGPA carries more weight in academic evaluations than any single semester GPA.
🔢 4.0 Scale Grades
A+ = 4.0, A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Grade points × credit hours = quality points for that course. Sum of quality points ÷ sum of credit hours = GPA. A grade conversion can vary slightly between institutions.
🌍 Scale Differences
US/UK: 4.0 scale most common. India: 10.0 scale (UGC standard) or 7.0 scale (some engineering universities). Pakistan: 4.0 scale (NUST, LUMS, IBA) or 5.0 scale (some public universities). Germany: 1.0 (best) to 5.0 (fail) — reversed direction. Always specify scale when sharing GPA internationally.
🎓 Academic Honours
4.0 scale: Summa Cum Laude (≥3.9), Magna Cum Laude (≥3.7), Cum Laude (≥3.5). 10.0 scale: Distinction (≥8.5 or 75%), Merit (≥7.0 or 60%), Pass (≥5.0 or 45%). Requirements vary by institution — check your university's specific thresholds for honours classification.
💼 Employer Requirements
Most companies: 2.5+ on 4.0 (or 60%+ on 10.0). Good companies: 3.0+/65%+. Top companies (Big 4, FAANG, investment banks): typically 3.5+/75%+. Pakistan/India: 3.0/10.0 or 60% for most private sector. Civil service: varies by ministry and post. Research and academia: typically 3.5+/75%+ required.
🎓 Graduate School
US Master's programs: typically 3.0 minimum, competitive programs 3.5+. PhD programs: 3.5+ common requirement. UK postgraduate: typically 2:1 (second-class upper) equivalent, roughly 3.3+ on 4.0 or 65%+. Australian postgraduate: Credit average (65%+) minimum, often Distinction (75%+) for competitive programs.

Improving and Interpreting CGPA

The CGPA recovery strategy

A poor early-semester CGPA is recoverable because CGPA is a weighted cumulative average. If you scored 2.5 GPA in your first two semesters (50% of credit hours), scoring 3.8 in your remaining semesters (50% of credit hours) results in a final CGPA of approximately (2.5+3.8)/2 = 3.15. The weight of early poor performance decreases with each additional semester. Focus on maximising GPA in every remaining semester — recovery is mathematically possible.

Course credit weighting

Higher credit-hour courses impact CGPA more than lower credit-hour courses. A 4-credit-hour course contributes twice as much to CGPA as a 2-credit-hour course. Strategic implication: prioritise performance in high-credit-hour major courses. A strong grade in a 4-credit core course compensates for a weaker grade in a 1-credit elective. Understanding this weighting helps prioritise study effort allocation across different courses.

CGPA in international applications

When applying internationally, your CGPA must be translated to the target country's scale. WES (World Education Services), NACES, and ICES are credential evaluation services that officially convert international GPAs for US universities and employers. These evaluations are required for most US graduate school applications from international students. Knowing your converted equivalent in advance helps assess competitiveness before applying.

🎓 CGPA conversion formulas (approximate): 10.0 scale → percentage: ×9.5. 10.0 scale → 4.0 scale: ×0.4. 4.0 scale → percentage: ×25. 4.0 scale → 10.0 scale: ×2.5. These are standard conversions — some institutions use slightly different multipliers. For official purposes (job applications, admissions), obtain the conversion formula directly from your university's registrar's office.

Avoid These Mistakes

Selecting the wrong source scale
A CGPA of 8.5 means something very different on a 10.0 scale (85%) versus mistakenly treated as a 4.0 scale (over 100%, impossible) — always match the scale selector to what your transcript actually uses.
Using approximate multipliers for official purposes
The conversion formulas shown here are standard approximations. For admissions, visas, or job applications, use your university's official conversion or a recognized credential evaluation service (WES, NACES, ICES) instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
For a 4.0 scale: Percentage = CGPA × 25. For a 10.0 scale: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 (common formula used by many Indian universities). For a 5.0 scale: Percentage = CGPA × 20. Always check your institution's specific conversion formula.
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA (Grade Point Average) is your average for a single semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the average across all semesters completed. CGPA gives a more complete picture of overall academic performance.
What CGPA is required for a job/masters?
Most companies: 2.5+ (4.0 scale) or 6.5+ (10.0 scale). Good companies: 3.0+/7.5+. Top companies: 3.5+/8.5+. US masters programs: typically 3.0+ minimum, competitive programs need 3.5+. UK masters: usually 3.3+ (equivalent to 2:1 honours).
